The 38-year-old Suitland man was fatally shot following a two-vehicle crash in Prince George's County over the weekend in the area of Suitland Road and Randolph Road in Morningside.
"It’s with a heavy heart that we remember and honor Joey, known to so many as Rozay. Joey was taken from us by gun violence—not from street conflicts, but because he chose to protect others," Jamal Holtz said.
"Joey died being a hero. He was our hero, a true protector who always shielded his family and friends from harm."
Now, his family is looking to give Holtz a proper sendoff.
"Joey had (two) wishes for his passing: to have a 'lit' service for his family friends, and to make sure his two sons were good," Jamal Holtz added. "Joey was filled with love and selfless sacrifice to protect his family."
According to Holtz's brother, the family is now raising money to get his body from the Medical Examiner's Office, prompting them to launch a fundraising campaign that quickly raised thousands of dollars in just days.
"Life won’t be the same without his booming voice, his contagious energy, and the way he brought laughter, debate, and warmth into every room," family said. "Joey had a way of making his presence known that no one could ever replicate, and his light will be deeply missed."
